Launched in 2000, Spiral Independent Creators Festival (SICF) is an open-call art festival that aspires to discover, foster, and support emerging artists and designers. We held an exhibition of the winner of the 23 Spiral Independent Creators Festival MARKET Grand Prize in Entrance (Spiral 1F) at the same time as SICF24.
Product designer, Leo Koda’s “In Fill Out” series was born out of his exploration in 3D printing, questioning whether it can be considered as the “future of craft”. In this project, a 3D printed sheet is boiled in hot water, expanding the shape and giving it its final design. This unique combination of high-technology (3D print) and low-technology (the act of boiling) and the originality of making the hidden infill or internal structure emerge at the surface, giving it a new role as pattern, made this project receive SICF23 Grand Prize in 2022.
This exhibition gathered for the first time in Japan the newest developments of “In Fill Out”. Each item is produced with consideration for the environment, using biodegradable plastic (PLA), which is extracted from the starch of agricultural products.
With Leo Koda’s exhibition, 4 creators who also have been awarded in SICF23 MARKET presented their creations.
